Pear Series

Whether captured as a series of paintings, or rendered individually, pears remain one of my favorite small subjects. The golden tones of the flesh, burnished with red and a smattering of freckles, the irregularities inherent in a Bartlett pear always make for a warmly inviting miniature work of art.

Pears are a favorite subject for my small works paintings. The lush shape of the pear, combined with the coloring and mottling of the ripe surface and a sprinkling of water droplets, and add to that a rich vintage satin fabric, make this study what I like to call my "Gem Series". Each individual painting has a gem-like quality to it. Each stands alone in it's uniqueness.

Small Glass Series

Initimate little works require colorful, lively subject matter to capture my imagination. I love hydrangea for its tiny blooms, and deeply tinted glassware for its depth of color. Flow Blue china, as in this painting with a teacup showcases incredible and delicate detail in rich blue and white pigment.

Rather than focus on just the subject of my small works, I look to include the drama of its surroundings. With sunlight and deep shadow together I work to add a richly mysterious element to these paintings. Teamed with interesting draping, ribbon and lighting, these paintings become little gems. Size varies, but usually the paintings run about 6"x6", and 12"x12" when framed.

From a perspective of looking down at the teacup on a bed of red and black satin, "Red, White and Blue" shows a unique way of looking at my subject matter. To best showcase the blue illustrations of the cup, I tipped it on its side and painted it from an overhead viewpoint. Conversely, "Amethyst Glass" was painted from a more traditional viewpoint. In my work, I enjoy painting from varying perspectives.
